Can steering wheel controls be added?
I have the 28J package and the Sound Group II with 7 speakers+subwoofer and REQ radio. My sticker doesn't say anything about the Electronics Convenience Group. I added UConnect voice/bluetooth without issue. Now I want to add steering wheel controls so I can control the radio/phone. The dealer hasn't given me a straight answer if it can be done other than to get them and try it. They do think it is prewired for them. I'd like to be sure before I drop $170 on bezel and switches. Has anyone tried this? Do I need the Electronics Convenience Group? Any info would be appreciated.

I am pretty sure you would not be able to do it. You would also have to change the clockspring behind the steering wheel also. This conversion would be expensive and I dont think you can program that into the car. It generally does not come with the wiring if the car was not built for it. I order wiring for cars all the time for theft jobs. It actaully has a harness built to that particular car. Good Luck! I hope it was of some help. I just dont want to see you spend a ton of money for someone who thinks they may make it work and then it doesnt. Just my $.02!

Thanks. I haven't done anything yet. Where it doesn't have the Electronics Convenience Group I don't think it's possible. I'm going to push the dealer to try to get a formal answer.

I had sent this in a PM but it may be helpful.
I absolutely believe that You can put an EVIC and steering buttons in your R/T. It won't be the simplest job but it looks like it can be done. I've looked over a lot of threads, manuals, and the web and made a few calls and here is what I found. It will take several steps. You will need the steering wheel buttons first, then you can add a cluster with an EVIC from an R/T. NOTE: I THINK you could use an R/T or SRT cluster same diff but that is a blind guess. Parts: The wiring harness for the steering wheel controls is PN #68039387AA for the 08-09 pigtail. This wire harness connects the switches to the clockspring inside the wheel. Now note that it appears that a number of these harnesses were mis-bagged and have a 7 plug harness. The correct part is a 5 plug harness. left steering wheel switch is #UZ571ZAAD msrp $56.90 right steering wheel switch #UZ561ZAAD msrp $56.95 steering wheel wire harness #68039387AA msrp $34.50 interface module (SCM) #68034920AA msrp $317.00 NOTE: You could use the silver faced switches for the '05-'06 LXs if you wanted: left switch is #UZ57XZAAC msrp $34.65 right switch #UZ56XZAAC msrp $55.95 The SCM (steering Control module) or interface module #68034920AA The cluster: This you will need to get from another car. used / crashed / what ever. Also note that the milage will follow the cluster so get one close to your car or higher and swap it in when you get to that point. I don't think it's a programmable number. Could be hacked? maybe.. You can do the wheel and not the cluster, but the buttons must be on the wheel for evic to work. Once all of the hardware is in place nothing will work, not even the lights, unless you activate it through star scan. To do that you need the sales codes. As best as I could find they are: LAZ is sales code for EVIC RDZ is sales code for steering wheel remote switches The correct codes should get entered with the vin in the star scan to update the vehicle. Same way it is done for say the remote start and keyless go. Now I'm not POSITIVE about the codes but they should work. I did find a list of all sales codes and I can email that to anyone as well if you want. I have also heard about this being done with an aftermarket programer but I did not research that. Once the programming is correctly updated, the switches will light up and come to life. They will control the radio and let you scroll through the EVIC display in the cluster. On the stock cluster without the EVIC display, the switches still work but only move through the odometer, trip, and temp display. To add the EVIC cluster, I think you may also need to add the Homelink setup. I did not dig into that yet, but I have seen threads where it's been done. Once the steering wheel switches are working the EVIC cluster is just plug n play. The switches work the standard cluster as well. There you have the short version with quite a few steps left out. Like removing the air bag from the wheel to put the parts in. This mod would be kind of a pain, and know this I HAVE NOT DONE IT, so I can't guarantee it,!!! But from what I've been able to find I believe it can be done. It will take some effort, there will be issues, but if a guy wanted to do it. you could. Later, Tim
