The SRT8 is a muscle cruiser. It is not as fast as the GT500 or SS Camaro but it is no slouch either. It is a performance platform that travels well on the highway and when you want it the HP/torque is there for the using. Now add the look, styling, and interior looks and what you have is a complete package that puts the GT500 and Camaro to shame. The question for you to answer is what do you want from your car?

Ford can't build anything fast that is naturally aspirated

I complane about the Mustang being only a 4.6L all the time. They have a 460, but chose not to use it. With all due respect to the lighter faster mustang GT, it has less power, a smaller engine, and is lighter than the Challenger, but it gets worse milage.
Typically when I talk milage people say some varration on "its a race car, milage is irrelivant" There is some good points to that, but if that was true then why doesnt the R/T have a 7L? And why dont you have an SRT-8? Also look at it this way, if the 5.7L HEMI makes more power, and with a heavier car still gets better milage than the Mustang, imagine if Ford used the engine formula of the Challenger on the lighter mustang? Imagine what 370 hp would do in the lighter mustang that doesn increase fuel usage. Anyway, to the forced induction point, Chevy puts a super charger on the ZR-1 to get the power up, Ford puts a super charger on the GT, and GT-500, where as Dodge uses "theres no replacement for displacement" and puts in a usable 8.4L in the Viper. Imagine if Dodge was to go forced induction on the viper? I want a Viper GT-R that has 20 pounds boost, to end the horse power wars, and shut up Ford and Chevy for Good. How much would it take with forced induction to put the Viper just over the Bugatti Veyron? and that would be like what 400 hp over the ZR-1?,

For the SRT-8 being worth it. Lookup a Brembo brake conversion. That will cost about $4,000.00 alone. Plus suspension, headers, bigger engine, and all the options that come stock you would need to order on the R/T. I just built out my 2010 R/T online today and it came to just over $37,000.00 MSRP. Yes if you can swing the payment the SRT-8 is definatly worth it.

I don't know what the real world mileage on a Challenger is. I can tell you what it is on a S-197. I've got one of those. Yes, I think the S-197 is lighter, but still to get the power of a 500 they not only go up on the cubes, but then they blow it.
I've got to believe (based on what SMS has done) that the Challenger would be hands down faster than the 500 if it came with a puffer as well. Cause I'm betting a SMS 570 will blow the doors off a GT500 |

The camaro's top speed is limited to 155, SRT8 is not and has a natural top end between 170-180 depending on who you talk to. There's a guy in this forum who lives in Germany and had his at 180 or 181 on the autobahn. The 1/4 mile time is the same as the Camaro with the L99 engine, you have to step up to the LS3 which is only available with a manual transmission to get a 3 tenths quicker. And you only get 1 tenth of a second quicker 0-60 in the Camaro with either the L99 or LS3 which both have the same 0-60 times, but the SRT8 has an automatic transmission vs the LS3 manual. A tweak or 2 would probably fix that. |

Factory headers, bigger more powerfull engine, brembo brakes, better suspension. etc. Go look up a big brembo brake kit for the R/T $4,500 front $3,500 rear. 8k just for the brakes. Option out an R/T and you will find more than the other 3k worth of options standard, and that doesnt count for the bigger more powerfull engine, suspension and headers. Honestly the SRT-8 is the better deal, but I bet the SE guys will say Im crasy as they can have 2 of their cars for one SRT-8 (close enough)
The SRT-8 is the real deal, if you can afford it, but for less you can get a stripped R/T for about 30k

I gues when comparring the Camaro also its typically against the R/T because its closer in price.
