6 months in an SRT8 in Germany
Hi Folks !
It is now roughly 6 months that I drive my SRT8 through Germany. The car drives extremely well and I had no problems yet. The only change I made so far was a Borla Catback Exhaust System to get a better and more realistic V8 sound. In Germany the car is very rare (I just saw one other Chally on the roads so far!) and where ever you park people crowd around the car. You must get used to the ever same questions like what horsepower, how much gas it uses and so on (yaddayadda). One of the questions that is aksed the most is "What year is it - 71 or 72 ?" That question alone is a pat on the back of the designers - they made a very good retro design! On the usually narrower streets we have over here it is still absolutely ok to drive once you got used to the size. On the Autobahn itīs "bad" front look gives you a very empty left lane. Even Porsches make space though most of them only want to look what car stays on their exhaust so well! One thing I donīt like is that the cruise control only sets to 100 mp/h... often on an empty Autobahn it would be nice to set the cruise speed at a 120 to 140 mp/h which is still cruising speed in Germany. What I like best is the situations where you are in the left lane (in Germany we are allowed to overtake only in the left lane!) with a slower car in front and a BMW or Mercedes or Audi in the back. Once the slower car is gone they start to push... and then I put the pedal to the metal and they get very small in the mirror. Then I change to the right lane, drop my speed, let them pass and give them a broad grin !!! To sum it all up: the best car I ever had and lots of fun to drive!!! Greetings from good ole Germany !!! Hi Wischel,
what are you doing in Germany? Are you stationed over here? It would be nice if we could talk at the phone. I live in Germany. |

So tell us just how fast you've had your SRT8 going over there! Have you found the top yet?

Iīve got my Challenger (and my 300c SRT) to a top speed at 172 mph. Measured with my GPS-Navigation-System, which also indicates the speed.

I want to have some fun with this... Do me a favor start a new post about your SRT8 Challenger smoking some Porsches, BMW's, Mercedes etc. Tell how you were doing 170 and pulling away... get some really crazy stories going about the Chally being the most feared car on the Autoban. Write enough so he knows you're German... I want to watch the expression on his face. Anyone else out there who wants to join in the more the merrier... I'll reply asking questions but just play along with the "Bad A$$ Foreign Challenger thread". Hey... I'll even start it.

Hi Hemi Rocket,
I drove approxemately 5 mls at this speed. Itīs very demanding holding the car on the road at that speed. You must know, german autobahn-lanes are narrower than american highways. The reason why the SRT8 goes faster than most german cars is: the SRT is not limited at 156 mph like most german cars. What the quality concernes: Yes, you are right, german cars in that class (Mecedes E 550 oder AMG 63, BMW M5 and so on) have are much better quality, but they cost twice as much as a Challenger SRT8 costs. And itīs the legend, driving an american muscle car, that just a few people in Germany drive. Itīs the Extraordinary that exites. Having a magnaflow cat back system installed I feel like driving a 1970 Challenger 440 big block. No german high tech car can give you that feeling. Greetings, Rolf |

Hi Hemi Rocket !
Iīv got mine to 178 mp/h yet. Measurement by GPS. The thing with the Porsches depends a little...when you meet a GT3 or a 911 Turbo you have no chance with a chally. But with a normal 911 or a Boxster or Cayman it is usually a duel you win, as long as the Porsche is not tuned so you canīt see it. This goes for Autobahn only ! Once you get on smaller and curvy roads the Porsches are gone real fast (if their driver knows what heīs doing). I still own a Porsche 968CS i use for the racetrack. On tracks like Nürburgring North Loop it is by far faster even though it only has about half the horsepower of the Chally. But it can take the corners much faster and you can break it a lot later... But the Audiīs, BMWīs, Mercs are normally no problem for the Chally, not with acceleration from lower speeds and not with speeds above 156 mp/h (they are electronically limited at that speed). Greetings from the Autobahn ! Wischel |

I think it's just really cool that a couple of Germans would like a car like this . The fastest I've been is only around 135... 178 I can't even think of what that must be like . PS both of you have very good English... Have you guys spent time in the states?
